A GUIDE TO CHILDCARE & EDUCATIONAL STAFF ROLES

  • Nanny/Manny

The traditional role of a Nanny has evolved like many other roles within private residence, for example, a position once performed only by women has seen an influx of men joining the profession who are formally known as a Manny. They carry out exactly the same duties as their female counterpart and occasionally preferred by some families where the children are all boys.  Another example of how times have changed is by combining roles, such as that of a Nanny/Housekeeper, ideal if the family have school aged children.  Other roles may include Nanny/Governess, Nanny/Tutor, or even Nanny/PA.

The role of the Nanny/Manny is to provide a safe, caring, nurturing and happy environment for children within the family home of the employer.  They provide all childcare duties, as well as related chores and tasks pertaining to the child/children only.  Most roles are usually sole charge and occasionally shared with the mother.  Nannies care for newborns, toddlers, pre-school and school aged children ranging from one child to several.  Some households, such as the very wealthy may have a Nanny for each child who can offer a strength working with a particular age group.

A Nanny/Manny requires excellent pedagogical skills and understanding of each developmental milestone to ensure their charges cognitive, physical, social and spiritual needs are met through a broad range of indoor and outdoor activities that are age appropriate to meet the individual needs and ability of each child.  Duties will vary according to the specific needs and requirements of each family and below is a guide of those that are traditionally assigned to that of a Nanny/Manny.

    • Be a good role model for the children at all times
    • Get children up, washed and dressed

    • Organise school bag/sports-wear for P.E and swimming, and reading books
    • Take children to and from school
    • Children’s laundry - wash, dry, iron and put away

    • Oversee homework and provide support
    • Arrange doctor’s appointments
    • Prepare and cook food for the children; ensure a healthy and balanced diet - some households are fully staffed and cooking will be done by the cook, but you many need to advise and plan a healthy diet for the week ahead with them and at the parents' request

Internationally, a nanny can earn anywhere between £600 and £1200 per week.  Occasionally, when a Head Nanny is required to manage other nannies, then a salary between £1400 and £1800 per week is paid. These roles rarely become available.

    Nanny & Manny Working Hours

Working hours for a Nanny or Manny will vary from one family to another. A typical week is usually 5 days with 2 days off, working between 8 and 12 hour days. However, some families require 6 days or even 24- hour cover. Part-time hours will vary and may include working weekends.

  • Maternity Nanny/Nurse

Having a baby is an exciting time from decorating the room to choosing the essential items in preparation for when your baby arrives, yet the most life changing event and joyous occasion for some new mothers is masked by endless sleepless nights leaving you exhausted during the day. This is one reason why having a Maternity Nurse in the early stages can be a breath of fresh air to mother’s (and father’s), whether it is your first, second or even third baby.  They are there to ensure you get plenty of rest, so you have the energy to get through the day enabling you to spend quality time to bond with your little one.  They will also help establish a routine that you can continue with confidence after they have left.

A Maternity Nurse is an invaluable addition to any family; they provide support and guidance, and teach new parents how to care for their baby and impart knowledge about their development over the weeks and months ahead.

Your accommodation will be a shared room with the baby, or in a room next door. You are not responsible for the baby during your day off, and entitled to a separate room without the baby if you normally share during your working hours. If overseas, a hotel room may be provided to ensure you are fully rested. If in the UK and you are working close to home, then you can always go home to sleep on your day off. When working 24 hour days, you are also entitled to a few hours off in the day.

    Maternity Nurse Salary Guide

Salaries will depend on experience, qualifications and location. and whether the Maternity Nurse will be caring for a single baby or multiples. Maternity Nurse Qualifications & Experience

To enter the profession as a Maternity Nurse, also known as a Maternity Practitioner or Maternity Nanny - you will nowadays require some form of maternity training.  Without formal qualifications, it is unlikely that you will be considered to work in private residence in the UK or internationally, especially, for first time mothers and fathers. However, the exception to this - is for those who have anywhere between 10 and 30 years plus experience, as many began their career long before qualifications came into force.  But, even these highly experienced and competent Maternity Nurses/Nannies will attend the array of courses on offer, to keep their skills and knowledge updated, which not only shows their commitment to the profession, but to stay at the top of their game in an industry that is highly competitive.

Other professions, such as a Paediatric Nurse or Midwife who has worked in a hospital will be accepted to work in private residence due to their background working with mothers and their babies, which is supported by the high level of training and qualifications necessary to perform these specialised roles.

When starting out, it as advised to gain experience in several UK family homes, before committing to an overseas position.

There are numerous maternity training colleges and independent providders, which offer qualifications that are OCN accredited and recognised internationally.  Babyem is one such training provider that deliver courses and can help with placements which sets them apart from their competitors, enabling you to gain experience and develop your confidence in a maternity role. You will also receive a reference at the end of the placement, which is a positive step in helping you get started in your chosen career.

Are you a first time parent? Or looking for a Maternity Nanny for your second plus baby? Get in touch today and let Bel-Rose International source and manage the recruiting  side while you concentrate on your new arrival.

  • Governess/Governor

Prior to World War 1, a Governess was common for those who were well-off (great social standing) and living in the countryside. This allowed families to home tutor their children - girls predominantly, as boys were often sent away to boarding school. It also enabled them to travel taking their governess with them, which ensured uninterrupted education and stability for the children.

Nearly a century on, you will find a Governess employed only by the very wealthy, such as royalty, celebrities, VIP’s and individuals of unlimited high net worth (UHNW) in London, Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East and Asia (China, Hong Kong and India).

During the Victorian era, the role of a Governess was undertaken only by women, but in the last 10 years there has been a demand for men to enter the profession - known as a Governor.  Just like their female counterpart, they perform exactly the same duties and care for school aged children - they do not care for young children or babies, nor do they cook family meals or do housework.

The exact duties will vary according to the family aims and outcomes required for their child or children, and equally, to what extent lessons are delivered formally, informally, or a combination of both.

Duties of a Governess & Governor:

    • Develop English language skills through all subjects including mathematics
    • Plan and prepare formal/informal lessons that are tailored to the child’s needs and level of ability
    • Provide creative, artistic, exploratory and research opportunities to support lessons that are age appropriate
    • Use different teaching methods and an array of resources that acknowledges different learning styles
    • Visit places of interest, such as museums and art galleries to develop learning and understanding of the world around us
    • Learn through play based activities
    • Accompany and participate when required in a range of sporting/extra-curricular activities
    • Support homework ensuring it is completed and handed in on time
    • Provide written and/or oral feedback to parents regularly
    • Liaise with school teachers and visiting tutors
    • Travel with family; incorporate different locations into the learning process
    • Teach good manners and social etiquette; instil good behaviour
    • Ensure the child’s overall well-being and safety at all times

    Governess & Governor Qualifications

There are no college courses as such in the UK that specifically relate to the profession of Governess/Governor as these roles are typically undertaken by those who are degree educated due to the educational focus that comes with such roles.

If you are a nanny with extensive experience (usually 10 years +) with or without a childcare qualification, then some families may consider CV applications if you are able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to support their children with their academic studies, usually from working within a similar role.

    Governess & Governor Salary

Salaries are high ranging from 800 to 1500 GBP and will depend on qualifications, experience, hours, exact requirements of the role and location.

The majority of governess and governor roles are based internationally and come with separate accommodation in the form of an apartment, or live-in with own bedroom and bathroom. In the UK, most roles are based in London and live-out more often than not.

  • Tutor/Teacher

Educators who teach in private residence are known as Tutors, though the term Teacher is equally used.  There is however, a difference between the two, but what they both have in common is, they impart knowledge that enables their students to progress.

    Private Tutor

Tutors provide valuable support with areas of learning that their student/s may find difficult, as well as develop concepts, problem solving and critical cognitive skills. They tend to work one-to-one tailoring lessons to the individuals needs and level of ability, drawing upon a broad range of teaching methods and learning styles that enable them to grasp the subject matter being taught.  Equally, they provide support with homework and reinforce what they are learning in school.  There is no law to state that Tutors have to be qualified in the subject matter they teach, though many are degree educated in their chosen field.

    Qualified Primary & Secondary Teacher

Teachers on the other hand must be qualified and possess a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) for the UK, specific to their chosen age group.  This means, a teacher who studied for the primary phase on the PGCE course (lasts a year on a full-time basis or two years part-time) includes practical teaching placements in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two covering all core and foundation subjects. Those who choose the PGCE route for example, already possess a first degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science).  There are other routes to become a professional school teacher, but the main point to remember is this:  to teach in a British government maintained school, as well as independent schools, a teaching qualification is essential.

    TEFL/TESOL & CELTA Teacher

A TESOL or CELTA certificate does not allow you to teach in a government maintained, or independent school, to deliver the British or International Curriculum for example, but a language school which is totally different. Anyone who is considering teaching English language skills to children or adult learners in the UK or internationally, then we highly recommend the TESOL or CELTA (and higher courses/diploma) as they involve a practical teaching element as part of the course and are recognised worldwide.

Duties of a Tutor & Teacher

    • Deliver all curricular subjects according to the British National Curriculum (or International/Cambridge/American Curriculum etc.) with a strong emphasis on English, Mathematics and Science
    • Develop Schemes of Work and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives
    • Plan and prepare lessons and activities that take account of individual needs and level of ability
    • Implement a range of teaching and learning styles
    • Link prior knowledge to earlier learning and develop ways to deepen and extend this further, as well as challenge, motivate and inspire their love of learning
    • Organise classroom, or room within the home to create a positive learning environment
    • Set and mark homework, including all classwork, and provide written and oral feedback to aid progress
    • Set achievable goals with the child to ensure standards and progress is maintained and continuous
    • Monitor and carry out formative and summative assessment and record progress
    • Use data from on-going monitoring of progress and assessment to inform future planning
    • Provide regular feedback to parents and written reports at the end of each term
    • Instil good behaviour, manners and respect; ensure discipline is fair and consistent with sanctions for poor behaviour, as well as provide praise and encouragement in all aspects of their work and rewards for achievement
    • Arrange and co-ordinate activities inside and outside the school/home to include educational visits that support lesson objectives and extend knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live
    • Implement ICT across subjects as a teaching and learning tool, as well as a broad range of resources
    • Provide opportunities to foster creative and artistic development, as well as develop independent learning through an inquiry approach that will foster skills within this area

When working in private residence in a role that is purely academic, it is important for parents to understand that teaching requires a lot of research and preparation (may involve developing own resources at times) with additional time spent writing up lesson plans (not always required in private residence, but any professional teacher will keep some form of record), preparing assessments and marking of work in addition to practical teaching.

    Tutor & Teacher Salary

Salaries can range from £600 to £1400 (full-time) depending on location, qualifications, experience, hours and job requirements.

    Tutor & Teacher Accommodation

If applicable, most notably international roles when hired from overseas; this will be a private apartment outside the family home, usually within walking distance, or a driver will collect you and take you home at the end of the day.  If live-in, a separate bedroom with bathroom is provided inside the home or staff house located within the grounds.  When travelling, separate accommodation is usually provided.  Separate accommodation is sometimes provided for full-time London tutoring roles or when combined with other aspects of a role, such as those of a Governess or Nanny.

A GUIDE TO HOUSEHOLD STAFF ROLES

  • Butler

The role of a Butler has changed over the years to accommodate the ever changing service needs and requirements of their employers, and often interchangeable with that of a House Manager.  They provide an exceptional level of service of running their employers home, so they can concentrate on business, social and family matters stress free.

Butlers may work in either a formal or informal home that ranges in size from plush apartments to period homes, and exquisite country estates and palaces in the UK and around the world.

Employers require discretion, privacy and confidentiality from their Butlers at all times, as well an understanding of social etiquette and protocol, and the ability to provide a formal service with fine attention to detail.

    Butler Duties

    • Manage household staff; organise duties and schedules; assist in staff training and development.
    • Greet guests and ensure the smooth running of formal dinners, parties and events.
    • Oversee, or participate in the setting up of formal table settings with fine attention to detail and perfection.
    • Wait on guests throughout their stay; serve meals and drinks.
    • Prepare travel arrangements; pack and unpack clothes.
    • Act as personal valet to the gentleman of the house (may or may not form part of the duties).
    • Knowledge & Skills of a Butler
    • Social etiquette and protocol, as well as cultural differences.
    • Manage household items and how to care and preserve them.
    • Maintain household budgets and inventories.

    Butler Qualifications

Many Butlers fall into the profession by having acquired a broad range of skills and knowledge from working in the hospitality industry, such as restaurants and hotels, and working their way up into management within these environments.  It is following this experience that many nowadays attend a Butler Training School or Academy based in the UK, or internationally.  Another route is to obtain a City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma for Butlers at colleges around the UK.

It is rare to enter the profession without extensive experience or even without qualifications, yet occasionally, homes that are less formal may provide the opportunity based on an individual's personality, skills they can bring to the role, their professionalism and whereby an employer feels they can trust the employee implicitly.  Residences that are formal usually prefer seasoned veterans who are extremely experienced, and/or formally trained.

For the finest training in the industry, we highly recommend The International Butler Academy in the Netherlands.  All training is undertaken in a beautifully restored mansion that dates back to 1892 and set within expansive grounds.  It is the largest private estate within the country and owned by the Academy, unlike other training providers.  It was restored with the Butler Academy and its students at the forefront, which is testament to the owners dedication and commitment to the first class training and facilities offered.   Of all the rooms within the mansion, 135 are accessible to students as part of their first class training which you will not find anywhere else in the world and why many men and women travel from across the globe to attend.

    Butler Salary & Benefits

Depending on experience and qualifications, salaries can range from £25,000 to £50,000 plus for full-time positions.  Roles can be live-in, either in the main residence or within the grounds, or live-out.  Additional benefits may be offered depending on the position, location and the individual employer.

Furthermore, they need to be IT literate to keep record of all administrative tasks.

Due to the varying requirements of each household, it is not uncommon for Household Managers nowadays to have additional duties, such as taking the children to and from school, collecting the dry cleaning, to carrying out additional errands. However, these duties tend to be carried out by those whose role is inextricably linked with another and is made clear in the job description and prior to commencement of employment such as:

    • Household Manager/Butler
    • Household Manager/Chauffeur
    • Household Manager/PA
    • Household Manager/Nanny
    • Household Manager/Governess

    Qualifications for a Household Manager

There are no formal qualifications to train as a Private Household Manager, yet you will be expected to have the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake such an important and trusted role to the highest of professional standards which will involve managing the house and its staff. This experience may come from working in the hotel business for example. A Butler whose role is combined with that of a Household Manager will have developed their skills working in hospitality with many attending a formal training school to achieve a qualification that is recognised worldwide.  Experience and a good academic background, equally with business and administration acumen will certainly improve your chances to enter this niche profession.

    Household Manager Salary & Hours

As with many roles in private households, salaries can vary tremendously, but you can expect a salary between 35,000 to 60,000 GBP per year.  Higher salaries are possible when multiple homes need to be managed.  Hours tend to be between 40 and 60 with many averaging about 50 per week.

    Accommodation for Private Household Managers

Most roles in the UK are live-out. However, international roles usually come with a separate apartment - this maybe within or outside the grounds of the family home.  Occasionally, own room and en-suite will be provided in the staff quarters. Other benefits may be provided, such as a car, or chauffeur driven enabling you to carry out your role efficiently and effectively.

  • Housekeeper

The main duty of the housekeeper is to keep a clean and tidy home whilst maintaining high hygienic standards throughout. Some employers require their employee to prepare and cook the family meal and if there are children in the house, occasionally they will be expected to supervise them (school age) when required.

    Housekeeper Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Tidy rooms putting things in their rightful place.
    • Polish furniture, fittings and ornamental objects.

Knowledge & Skills of a Housekeeper

Housekeepers are expected to know about cleaning products and sanitisation in order to maintain the cleanliness of a home to high hygienic standards; applying knowledge and use of products to items that require specialist care is important to prolong the life of such items. It is helpful to know how to use specialised cleaning equipment and how to maintain them.  You need to be physically fit and have the stamina to fulfil your duties to an exceptional standard - cutting corners is not acceptable. You need to be methodical and organised in your approach, as well as honest, loyal and reliable with excellent time management skills.

    Housekeeper Qualifications & Salary

Formal qualifications are not always necessary, with many starting out as room attendants in hotels, or from working in private households.  The more experience you have behind you with top notch skills and knowledge, and a qualification being a huge bonus, will put you in a more favourable position for the higher paid positions.  International roles tend to be full-time and live-in with your own bedroom and en-suite within the family home, or shared staff house within the grounds. Those in the UK are either live-in or out with hours ranging from a few hours, part-time or full-time depending on the size of the home and the specific requirements of the employer.  Salaries on a full-time basis will range from £16,000 to £34,000 based on qualifications and experience.  The salary tends to be higher for overseas roles and net pending location. However, the salary is merely a guide.

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Housekeeping is just one of the qualifications to obtain that will benefit you in your chosen career. Others are available within the hospitality industry.

  • Chef

A private chef employed in private residence is becoming more popular, not just in Europe, but around the globe. They are hired by families who require a high standard of culinary knowledge, skills and creative flair, to cook the finest of cuisine to perfection, and presented in a manner that matches that required by top restaurants around the world.  Furthermore, their knowledge and understanding of the science of food, as well as nutrition and diet enables them to cater to all cultural/dietary requirements, including those with allergies and intolerance to certain foods/ingredients.

If you are hosting a dinner party, then you need look no further, as your chef will advise and work with you to create a menu, as well as hire additional staff, such as a sous or commis chef etc., when large numbers are being catered to.

Anyone who has not employed a personal chef before, should remember this:  a professional chef who has worked hard for their title may not take too kindly to being referred to as the “cook”, so best to call them “chef” out of respect.  So what is the difference between a cook and a chef?  The term Chef and Cook are sometimes referred to as one of the same, yet the main difference that sets them apart is this:

    • A Chef holds a professional degree from a culinary arts school that is recognised and valued worldwide. They work in hotels, high end restaurants, on cruise ships and multi-million pound yachts, as well as in private residence for the very rich.  In French, the term Chef means Chief, and as the name suggests, is in charge of the kitchen and all staff that work under him or her.  In private residence, however, they may work solely on their own.  Their experience and training means they are highly skilled in sourcing the finest ingredients, food preparation and handling, as well as storing food correctly at the appropriate temperature. Cooking in a kitchen that is sanitised daily is imperative as is avoiding cross contamination of food when preparing it. A qualified chef will be up-to-date with all health and safety matters relating to the above.

    • A Cook on the other hand may, or may not hold a professional qualification.  For those who do not, their skills and experience are not to be undermined.   They can produce traditional tasty home cooked meals and may specialise in a particular cultural cuisine, such as Chinese, Mexican or Indian etc.  Those that are employed in private residence are sometimes required to split their time between cooking the family meal and housekeeping duties - such a role would be made clear in the job description.

    Qualifications

Despite the clarification above, many professional chefs enter the profession without formal qualifications. The main purpose of employing a chauffeur is to transport their employer and any passengers to and from their destination in a safe, comfortable and efficient manner. This could include the office, airport, restaurant, theatre, shopping and events, as well as taking the children to and from school, and any activities they attend.

As a chauffeur, you need to be courteous, polite and professional. Equally, conversations that take place between your employers and any guests travelling, must be kept confidential at all times. You are expected to have excellent geographical knowledge and be able to use maps to ascertain best route, and equally, satellite navigation systems to get you from A to B.  There will be times when your employer's plans will change last minute, so you need to remain calm and unwavered with requests and instructions to drive somewhere being honoured during your working day, whether it is picking up the dry cleaning to additional errands independent of the employer.

Chauffeurs require high standards of grooming and hygiene, and are usually required to wear a uniform, especially when employed in a more formal household and for special events.  A smart suit, however, is acceptable for most positions in private residence, it just depends on what your employer requests.  Normally, the employer will cover the cost of the uniform, or provide an allowance.

It is the chauffeur's responsibility to ensure the vehicle is properly maintained with all legal documentation up-to-date, as well as ensure it is immaculately clean inside and out.

    Chauffeur Duties & Responsibilities

    • Ensure the vehicle has adequate fuel for each journey and the day ahead - fuelling up with employers in situ is not acceptable unless on very long journeys where this cannot be avoided.
    • Clean inside and outside the vehicle.
    • Have the vehicle professionally cleaned when required.
    • Carry out maintenance checks, such as oil, water, tyres, windscreen washer and make sure that all lights inside and out are functioning replacing bulbs where necessary.
    • Arrange regular service checks and hire an alternative vehicle of similar standard when the main car is in for maintenance work if required.
    • Book the car in for its yearly MOT.
    • Arrange insurance for purpose of use with appropriate roadside cover.
    • Keep all receipts with a record of all costs for the employer.

    Chauffeur's Working Hours

A chauffeur's hours will vary according to the specific needs and requirements of their employer and can often be irregular, as well as involve early morning starts and finishing late in the evening. It will also include working weekends and bank holidays when required to do so.  To be a chauffeur your time keeping skills are crucial to this role as is your ability to offer complete flexibility.

Important:  Smoking is not permitted in the vehicle at any time! This includes when passengers are not present.  As a chauffeur you are to drive with the utmost care and attention in all weather conditions, adhering to speed limits and other rules and regulations pertaining to the road and driver safety, and those of its passengers which is imperative at all times. The use of alcohol or any form of substance abuse prior, during or on your way home from work when driving is illegal and will result in instant dismissal and may result in legal action being taken against you.

    Chauffeur Qualifications

A full valid driver's license with clean record is required.  Additional qualifications are preferred and an essential requirement for some families and individuals, especially VIP's, Royalty, Celebrities, Pop Stars, Actors and Actresses, Government Officials and other High Profile and High Net Worth individuals is an advanced motoring qualification.  Some of these include the following:

    • Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) preferred.
    • The Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents (RoSPA) offers an excellent 5-day training course for Chauffeurs with certification provided and membership.
    • British Chauffeurs Guild
